I’ve never been the kind of artist that expects to create. It always happens to me….like a stumble, or a sudden summer storm. It’s the unexpected friend that stops by. The surprise delight of a perfectly roasted chicken. Songs, for me, come from that “other” place…and I can’t force them over. It’s not something I control. But what I’m learning is to posture myself in order to better wait for it…and listen
Every week on Tuesday night we practice in my unfinished attic, cautious not to bump our heads on the beams overhead, forming a loose square around the drum kit crouched under the eaves and the peeling, pink, foam insulation batting. I carry a space heater upstairs an hour before the musicians come over, just to get things a bit more toasty, and then we brew some tea and talk in the kitchen with my daughter.
Had enough of looking back at 2010 yet? Come on, you people frequent the Social Diary. You love nostalgia about things that just happened. Well, here’s the best of the best (and the worst) of the stuff that happened not very long ago. I remember it like it was yesterday.
We’d like to get some opinions on a subject that we’ve been contemplating for some time. We at Backstage All Access today had a discussion about whether it was ok to post videos someone took of a band’s performance. So it raised the larger question. As a creator of artistic works, what constitutes giving your work away and when is it acceptable?
The instrumental groove mechanics Paucity will release a new 3 song EP in January with a limited one time pressing of 100 copies. The album, entitled “Wait Weight”, will only be available in two ways. You can purchase the album in person at their show at Wealthy Theater on January 13th or order online on that day only at www.paucity.us.
John Sinkevics of the Grand Rapids Press posted an article Tuesday in which he talks to the management of The Intersection about the status of their bankruptcy reorganization, and the new changes taking place at a venue that has been the pillar of Grand Rapids live music for the last 30 years.
According to the Bureau Of Labor Statistics (whose only job seems to be telling us how many people don’t have jobs), the unemployment rate in Michigan stands at 12.8%. Bloomberg reported that the average household income in Michigan dropped 6.2% last year, and the Bureau Of Economic Analysis says we had the second worst drop in GDP in the nation. Don’t tell that to the websites in Michigan that have found a silver lining in the tar pit that is the Michigan economy: More people are sitting home on the internet.
Thursday morning the 1,002 residents of Grand Rapids, OH awoke to discover that their small town had some unusual overnight growth. It was now the largest city in Ohio according to the only source left for trustworthy news: Facebook.
Recently, Tokyo Morose was in the studio with producer Matt Ten Clay recording some new tracks so we took the opportunity to sit down with singer and multi instrumentalist Erin Lenau for a chat and the band was kind enough to allow us to come in and give you a peek at their recording session in photos and video.
Verve Pipe and Rockit King guitarist Lou Musa has announced he has signed an endorsement deal with Bugera Amplifiers. We wanted to get the news straight from Lou so we asked him about it and also took the opportunity to take another totally unfair poke at his band’s equipment jinx.
The greatest rock and roll band in the world are The Rolling Stones. I’ll go farther to say rock and roll as we know it wouldn’t exist without The Stones.
The most frequent question we get at Backstage All Access is “How do we get our band on your website?” Well, we’ve put together a list of information we need to add you to our artist pages. Basically, keep in mind that our goal is to help people discover new music and use that page as a hub to find all the places you exist on the internet. Some of the first artists we posted didn’t have this much information but we’ve stopped creating pages for artists that don’t meet these criteria because we don’t think it does the artists (or our website) any favors.
